Problem with AC3 Audio Switching

Tested to apply AC3 audio as main audio for one of my HD channels (drag & drop the AC3 audio as first in channel editor and having MPEG as secondary audio). When recording this channel there is abnormal amounts of audio switching going on within a single recording. Sometimes it goes completely haywire and switches from 5.1 to stereo to 4.1 to 3.1 and so on. It also switches from 48 khz to 44,1 khz to 32khz and so on. When it gets like this the recording get screwed up. Can't be played at all.

 

If watching the channel live and checking the DVBViewer DVB Source the audio format is stable and do not switch like RS does.

Anyone experienced this before? This problem started with RS 1.9.6 and are probably plugin related.

When it gets like this the recording get screwed up. Can't be played at all.

..plugin related? Well if the audio stream is not correctly descrambled the source filter will probably read wrong headers. You can't blame the RS for this :rolleyes:

Well, the plugin handeling got changed in RS 1.6.9 according to the changelog. Not clear on any details though. Thought that would have something to do with my issue, but when starting to backtrace it (downgrading to RS 1.9.5.3) it seems the audio switching goes on there as well if using AC3 audio, so it looks like you`re right.

 

The problematic channel is commercial-free and there shouldnt be any audio switching going on in the middle of shows. Only when next show starts. Seems my only option is to go back and use MPEG audio only, since the root cause can't be discussed in this forum B)

Hi guys!

 

It seems this change has brought this old audio switching bug back, but this time its for MPEG audio:

 

  • Fix: Recorder: Recording of an inactive / non-existing audio track with "Options -> Recorder -> Auto-split on channel data change" switched on and "All audio tracks" switched off could result in thousands of small files. Now the recorder switches over to an active audio track in this case.

     

     

The recording gets completely screwed up and cant be played. No fileplayer out there can play it. User team2k contacted me when he got this RS 1.30.1 failure first, so when i got it also the bug was confirmed.

The funny thing is the audio switching bug may have revealed why the DVBViewer recording properties explorer plugin tool sometimes fails to get mediainfo for video and audio. The "sometimes" missing mediainfo has for me with RS 1.30.1 gotten to "frequent". Not in every recording though.

Analyzing the log of the affected recordings there is always an error or two 2 seconds after start time. That error corrupts the metadata container. Hence mediainfo.dll cant read from the corrupted section.

Strange that all these samples are recorded from the same channel though. Lets see if there will be cases from other channels as well.

I can't see any evidence for that interrelation.

Mostly hardware / driver related (or may be some decryption issue, dunno). I sometimes get it with my old SkyStar S2, but with no other device. However, It never affects the recording badly. Just two or three TS packets missing at the beginning. The files can always be played without problems.

 

That error corrupts the metadata container.

I also had one recording (the main/correct sound was MPEG Audio Mono xx kHz) with version 1.30 that had part of audio corrupted and in log file was lines as:

In my case i havent got any more screwed up recordings since unticking "auto split on channel data change".

The technical term is correct, but there simply is no metadata in a recorded TS (except if the EPG is recorded, but I'm sure MediaInfo won't look at it).

 

The audio format has to be detected by reading and decoding PES and frame headers, the latter appearing every 24 ms or so. Some missing packets at the beginning can't corrupt them all. Statements like "that error corrupts the metadata container" show that you have no idea how transport streams, the embedded packetized elementary streams and audio frames are structured and how format detection works in this case.

 

Well, that's ok. Not everybody can be an expert. But - and that's the crucial point - you write if you were an expert. The result is nonsense. It's misleading. Other non-experts will read and believe it. Sometimes half knowledge is worse than no knowledge at all. So I feel it needs a clear statement from my side.

 

The whole bloody thing looks like the recorder already receives corrupted data, for whatever reason. The recorder's audio format detection desperately tries to get in sync with a frame structure that doesn't deserve to be called a frame structure anymore. That can't be the outcome of some missing packets at the beginning. It's a continuous issue. And it depends on special conditions, because all my test recordings with RS 1.30 were ok, no matter if MP2 or AC3 or "auto split on channel data change" off or on. And there were no beta tester reports about corrupted recodings.

 

The logs above suggest that the issue is somehow related to descrambling, maybe even in a way that should not be discussed here and that will not be supported from my side.
