What is the language for non-Unicode programs on the PC where the DMS and DVBViewer are?

I have spent some time with setting my PC to different languages and can now reproduce the problem.

It does happen with Arabic and also with Russian letters (and I guess with every language that uses non-latin characters). Favourite folders and favourite channels with such characters are not displayed correctly in Kodi. However, channel names (from the channellist) are displayed correctly.

I think it happens because the DVBViewer add-on for Kodi accesses the file favourites.xml and can't translate the content to Unicode (the header says the encoding is UTF-8 but actually it is not). This is the wrong method. The add-on should use /api/getchannelsxml.html?favonly=1 for getting the favourites in the same way as the channel list. This method delivers all names as Unicode, so the add-on does not have to mess around with the favourites.xml.

It would be good if you could post the issue here

and provide a link to your DVBViewer Forum topic in this post.

The add-on should use /api/getchannelsxml.html?favonly=1

Should already be the case, see this commit. Before that, the add-on read favs via getfavourites.xml. This was changed in June and got released with DVBViewer add-on version 3.05.

@Nayef,

can you check your Kodi and DVBViewer add-on version? Are you using a locally stored favourites.xml file in Kodi?

Also pinging @manül on this.

Yesterday I've updated Kodi from 17.0 to 17.4. The DVBViewer Add-On 2.4.11 tells me that there is no update available.

BTW: With this combo I've experienced several hard crashes under Windows 8.1 causing Kodi to freeze or to be closed by Windows, which made testing quite cumbersome, and I learned to keep the mouse cursor away from the TV and Radio menu items while the add-on ist starting / updating the channel list / EPG... even mouse over had to be avoided. But that's a different topic.

3.x.y is only compatible and shipped with Leia/nightly.

@NayefIf you're running Kodi on Windows you can also try https://ci.appveyor.com/project/manuelm/pvr-DVBViewer/build/Krypton-060c116/artifacts which includes backports from Nightly for Krypton. However not tested and no version bump. So make sure the addon really gets overwritten. e.g. by checking if support for Wake on Lan is available in the PVR settings.

Also since this is a issue with Kodi this is clearly the wrong forum.

Anyway, I've learned a lot about the twists and turns of DVBViewer/DMS character coding, which was the main purpose of my activities. It's a miracle that at least some channel names are still readable after they finally arrived in Kodi :)

PVR startup indeed used to be quite flaky. Improved a lot in Leia nightlies though.
