Advantages of DVBViewer

DVBViewer is better than TotalMedia in many ways. Unlike TM, when using DVBViewer, you will never encounter system hang up issue even when hardware acceleration is turned on. Also, you will not encounter the channel switching problem when ATV (Asia Television) broadcast changes from SD to HD broadcast 8pm every night. Not only that, DVBViewer allows you to choose your own favorite decoder  (e.g. CyberLink, CoreAVC, ffdshow, AC3Filter, etc.) Even better, DVBViewer provides a lot of features that TM simply cannot match, including custom plugins to further enhance the already rich feature set DVBViewer has already provided. Their official website has also a forum to allow you to post your comments and suggestions on how to improve DVBViewer! It is really worth spending HK$151 to buy the software.

The posts #1 - #8 below

Will teach you from how to buy, install, setup, record, pip, record 4 channels at the same time, perform editing, adding plugins to enhancements/techniques :boxing:

For example:

How to automatically view TVB channels' subtitles when you start up DVBViewer / immediately after switching channels

Viewing 16:9 programmes in full screen with 4:3 or 5:4 monitors

Viewing windowbox programmes in full screen with 16:9 or 16:10 monitors etc

Go to "hardware" tab and select your DVB device as indicated in the image below

I use Mygica D268 USB stick, and the device name is shown as "Digital TV"

Make sure you set "Digital TV" as "preferred" device and "terrestrial" type as well

post-12906-1206759564_thumb.png

Be patient and do not try to search for channels just yet, because you have to set the decoder first

Go to the "DirectX" tab, configure the "renderer" and "decoder" as in the image below

If you are using XP, you are suggested to use "VM9 Renderer", if you are using Vista, you should choose "Vista EVR"

If your display card supports hardware acceleration, you can use CyberLink decoder

In the image below, the option "Use DVBSource for MPEG files" can give a more stable video view and you are recommended to select it

And the option "VMR Options" is for hardware acceleration display ratio problems e.g. cannot detect 16:9, select it if required

My XP settings is a follows:

post-12906-1206759590_thumb.png

Vista settings:

post-12906-1206759602_thumb.png

Now you can perform the channel scan:

post-12906-1206758812_thumb.jpg

post-12906-1206758825_thumb.png

Alternatively, you can also import Channel List

HKEPC Post #7 has my Chinese Channel List: http://forum.hkepc.com/viewthread.php?tid=...e=1#pid15284287

(The channel list is for receiving signals from the Tsz Wan Shan station, may not be suitable for everyone, but you are advised to give it a try)

Import Method

First go to Channel > Channel Editor

Then click the import / export buttons located on the bottom left

post-12906-1206759339_thumb.png

After the scanning is complete, you should be able to see the Channel List

RECORDING

Before recording, you need to first go to "Options" in the "Recorder" tab

First setup a target recording folder

The Output Format should be set to "TS"

Format options should tick "DVB Subtitles" and "all audiotracks", so that after recording, TS files can have all the audio similar to NICAM in analog TV

Below has a "Use smart buffer" option, you can set it to a larger value, so that the recordings will always be smooth without choppy video

post-55191-1206811576_thumb.jpg

Now for the "Recordings" tab, you can setup the file name here

You are recommended to delete %event to avoid recording problems due to EPG encoding issue

post-55191-1206811649_thumb.jpg

####################################################

Screenshot

Note: This is only supported under 3.9.3.25 beta or later version

Go to the "General" tab

De-select "Use EPG for screenshot filename" as indicated in the image below, to prevent saving issue due to encoding issue

Then select the screenshot type

post-55191-1206812185_thumb.jpg

You can also setup image capture shortcut, and the method is as below

screenshot captured is also placed under the recording target folder

####################################################

SUBTITLES

Now for the "subtitles" tab, tick "Enable if Available"

Change the Language to "Chinese"

Set the Delay to "200" then restart DVBViewer and the subtitles timing should now be correct

post-55191-1206811716_thumb.jpg

To start subtitle

Right click the screen > Subtitles > DVB: ###### (CHI or CON=chinese, ENG= English)

Subtitle and OSD may have incorrect display ratio and showed up strangely

The following method works only under 3.9.3.45beta or above

To modify subtitles ratio, you can go to Options > OSD Appearance

Set Left and Right to 90 in Overscan adjustment located on the top left corner

post-55191-1209307677_thumb.jpg

after that subtitle ratio should be correct

PIP + RECORD 4 CHANNELS AT THE SAME TIME

PIP: Multiple channel recordings is only possible for the following same CH combinations:

CH22: TVB Jade, TVB Pearl, aTV Home, aTV World

CH35: TVB HD Jade, TVB J2, TVB Interactive

CH37: aTV News & Business, aTV His TV, aTV Her TV, aTV Plus TV, aTV HDTV, CCTV4

PIP Example

First change to "TVB Jade", Right click the screen > View > Preview

Then use "Channel List" to change to "TVB Pearl"

post-55191-1207839511_thumb.jpg

The method for recording 4 channels at the same time is similar, all you need to do is to switch to another channel when you are recording a channel

You can also use "View Record Plugin (to be introduced in this tutorial later)

Please note that we need to de-select "stop stream while tuning"

or else when you switch to another channel, the signal will be stopped and recordings will be corrupted

post-55191-1206813090_thumb.jpg

To view the details during recording, go to the "Recordings and Device Statistics" window

All recordings are in TS format and no problems at all ;)

SCHEDULED RECORDING

Install Recording service

The service is able to start the computer from Standby or Hibernate without taskscheduler, in fact you MUST disable the Taskscheduler in the DVBViewer. The computer will be started 3 minutes before the time to let the devices initialize properly.

Original description from #89 of this post written by HKEPC Forum Member edmondcck:

There are two methods...

Under "Main Application" there is a DVB Task Scheduler that can allow automatic starting of DVBViewer on a specified time... What the program does is just create a job in Windows scheduler ... so that DVBViewer is automatically started 3 minutes before the scheduled recording time...

The second method is what hklam has suggested, that is the Recording service.... this one you do not even need to have DVBViewer turned on...

This tool has also got a web interface to allow you to set the schedules....<-- This is actually a simplified version of the Webserver Control, without the streaming function....

but there is a catch, that is Chinese programme name will show scrambled symbols instead of Chinese characters, the full feature Webserver Control on the other hand, do not have this issue...

I myself use the Recording service....it is more convenient, just install the service, and let it run automatically and that's it...

####################################################

PLAYING

The recorded TS files can be played with MPC, KMPlayer, Windows Media Player

If you want to see the subtitles or 2nd audio channel as well, you can use DVBViewer to play the file

Simply press DVBViewer > Open Video

####################################################

VIDEO CUTTING TOOL TSPlayer

TSPlayer can cut MPEG2 / H.264 TS files and also keep the subtitles and audio channels

You can download TSPlayer from the members area of DVBViewer and place it under

C:\Program Files\DVBViewer\Plugins

Click on the green "icon set start point" and "end point"

Then click on the red icon export

post-55191-1206813626_thumb.jpg

MPEG2 format can also preserve subtitles and multiple audio tracks

post-55191-1206813660_thumb.jpg

You can also set the "decoder" and "Output Settings" in the Options Screen of TSPlayer

NetStream - NETWORK TV STREAMING

This is a quote of the topic written in DVBViewer forum by Lars_MQ:

This is (home)network streaming. It streams the channel your are watching into your home network and you can use vlc, mpc or the DVBViewer to view it on a network client computer. You could use it also on the same PC.

In most cases the datarate is way too high for streaming into the internet.

Member Tips #1

Below is the information from HKEPC member frankiepoon

Ref #8: http://forum.hkepc.com/viewthread.php?tid=...e=1#pid15022672

It is very simple:

Make sure you install "netstreaming plugin" when installing DVBViewer:

post-55191-1206890431_thumb.jpg

Then activate NetStream by going to Plugin > Netstream > active

post-55191-1206890490_thumb.jpg

And the choose "configure", type in your ip; I am using a router, so mines is 192.x.x.x

After that, type in port/use the default port; if you are using router, make sure it is the port of your router~

post-55191-1206890536_thumb.jpg

Then choose Subtitle and Audio in the following screen

post-55191-1206890565_thumb.jpg

Next, start VLC Player and open your URL as below

File > Open File > Network > http

123.x.x.x:2345 (IP:Port no.)

post-55191-1206890637_thumb.jpg

Finally, click ok and you are done. The quality is the same as the broadcast quality~

If you have a lot of bandwidth, you can increase the number of users in "max. Users"

P.S. You can also select the audio track and subtitles too

Member Tips #2

Below is the information from HKEPC member FOWLER NEVER BEATEN

Ref #8: http://forum.hkepc.com/viewthread.php?tid=959100

I always work at night and do not want to miss any TV programmes, so I will stream tv broadcasts for viewing at work place, below is what I do to to perform the streaming

(Because of VLC codec problems, My methods only stream 4 old digitized anolog channels + J2 channel + TVB Interactive Channel)

First, let me talk about my DEVICE

PC: e2160, 2G ram, Mygica USB

Software: DVBViewer, VLC

There are two methods

Method 1

1. Start DVBViewer > plugin > Netstream >

"TICK" active , then > Configure

This page allows you to choose which IP and port # you want to allow Steaming,

IP is your LAN CARD IP

I have a ROUTER, so I use an internal IP

for PORT #, I use 1234

post-55191-1207463788_thumb.jpg

2. Open VLC on the PC that you want to view the video stream

File > Open Network Stream

Enter your DVBViewer Machine's IP and port # to HTTP URL

Because I use another machine to view

So I only need to set the internet IP address of my DVBViewer server,

If you want to stream to Internet users, the other party's VLC has to input your REAL IP

post-55191-1207463800_thumb.jpg

This method is the simplest and was discussed before in ezone

However if you want to stream to the Internet, and you have limited UPLOAD bandwidth, you will get into trouble

The reason is because the 4 old digitized analog channels alone has 4-5Mbps each

If your broadband is not fast enough, then what can you do?

The answer is to use Method 2

Method 1 discussed how you can use DVBViewer + VLC to view the stream

But the bandwidth of your broadband connection has to be 4-5Mbps, and not everyone have such huge bandwidth

Now method 2 should be able to solve your problem

1. Same as step 1, first configure DVBViewer NetStream Setting

2. I use the same machine to open VLC, so the method is the same as step 2 in Method 1, go to DVBViewer, setup IP and port number

3. In Advanced Options, choose "Stream/save" > "Setting"

4. Go to stream output page

"Http" type in your streaming PORT, because DVBViewer has already used 1234, so here I use 2345 instead

"Transcoding options" - this part helps you compress DVBViewer stream into another format, and then stream to the Internet for VLC viewing

Below is to compress video to 1024kbps mp4 and audio to 192kbps mpga

post-55191-1207463814_thumb.jpg

1024+192 = 1296Kbps = 152KBps

This way, you save a lot of upload bandwidth

So the above are the two streaming methods I use

I am not good in writing, so please correct me if I am wrong

If you have better methods, please post here!

USING DVBViewer BETA

You can download the latest DVBViewer Beta from the members area

Currently, the latest beta is 3.9.3.45

This beta has added Chinese Languages (Simplified and Traditional) support and also fixed Chinese EPG and Subtitle issues

For more details, visit: http://forum.hkepc.com/viewthread.php?tid=951998

To use the beta

First install 3.9.2.0 (The release version)

After that, make a copy of your DVBViewer located in C:\Program Files\DVBViewer

Now, extract the 3.9.3.45beta files to the new folder

This way, you will not destroy the release version 3.9.2.0

You can also create shortcuts for faster executing DVBViewer Beta

post-55191-1207917956_thumb.jpg

Before you start the Beta version, you should first backup the Data folder

Method: "Start Menu" > "Programs" > "DVBViewer" > "Data folder"

XP Actual Location: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\CMUV\DVBViewer

Vista Actual Location: C:\ProgramData\CMUV\DVBViewer

ENHANCEMENTS / TECHNIQUES

In this session, I will introduce modifications to setup.xml to enhance your subtitle viewing efficiency

For modification, you can go to Start Menu > Programs > DVBViewer > Data Folder

That is, for XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\CMUV\DVBViewer

for Vista: C:\ProgramData\CMUV\DVBViewer

Then open setup.xml with Notepad

post-55191-1206814273_thumb.jpg

AUTOMATIC LOADING OF SUBTITLES WHEN OPENING DVBViewer/SWITCHING CHANNELS

You may found that when you start DVBViewer or after switching channels, DVBViewer will no longer load TVB subtitles

Everytime you need to right click the screen > subtitles >DVB:CON

But you may also found that aTV channels has no such problems

For this issue, you can open setup.xml with Notepad (For safety reason, you should backup before editing)

Find <section name="Subtitles">

Then change Language2 to con (as in the image)

Language1 keep using chi

After that, TVB and aTV subtitles should be displayed automatically by DVBViewer

Viewing 16:9 programmes in full screen with 4:3 or 5:4 monitors

When viewing 16:9 programmes in full screen with a 4:3 or 5:4 monitor

You may found out that both top and bottom of the screen contains a black box area (letterbox)

HKEPC forum member Polynomials suggested in post #63 on how to solve the problem

Ref: http://forum.hkepc.com/viewthread.php?tid=...e=7#pid15304644

First, we change to full screen, then right click > "zoom..." (note the "..." after zoom)

post-55191-1207839774_thumb.jpg

After that, we can click "Pan & Scan" or "Recall#" to zoom

I suggest you use Recall# to zoom, because this can be reverted back to normal easily

post-55191-1207839800_thumb.jpg

After pressing Recall#3, you should be able to zoom to a level where letterbox disappear

post-55191-1207839826_thumb.jpg

Viewing windowbox programmes in full screen with 16:9 or 16:10 monitors

Similar to the "zoom..." method above, you can also view windowbox programmes in full screen with 16:9 or 16:10 monitors

The following programme used windowbox:

post-55191-1206814933_thumb.jpg

After pressing Recall #3:

OGG settings:

post-55191-1206815390_thumb.png

VIDEO POST PROCESSOR PLUGIN

The Post Processor Plugin inserts a new entry "Video Post Processor" in the DVBViewer's Plugins Menu, allowing you to select a post processor like ffdshow, NVidia etc. for video playback, provided it is installed in your system, or "None" (default), if you don't want to use a post processor.

A new post processor setting triggers "Rebuild Graph" in DVBViewer. Each time when the chain of playback components (the filter graph) is rebuilt, the plugin tries to insert the selected post processor between the video decoder and video renderer.

With the hardware driver & Total Media 3.5 installed, I can scan & view all 13 digital TV channels in my area. Total Media freezes the screeen once in a while. I have to shutdown the application and start it again to resume it to operation.

I uninstall Total Media, installed PowerDVD & updated to v8.0.1830.50, kLite Mega Codec Pack 4.1, Windows6.0-KB951685-x86.msi and finally DVBViewer v3.9.4. I followed the tutorial on setting the Options regarding Hardware and DirectX. All the options including Video Renderer, Audio Renderer, MPEG2 Video Decoder, H.264 Video Decoder, MPEG Audio Decoder, AC3 Audio Decoder are set as described.

However, I can't locate the "View"-->"Filters" menu item within the DVBViewer program.

Then I skipped to the Channel scan function under which all the 13 digital TV channels are found. When I opened the Channel List and tried to view a channel, the message "Cannot load Source Filter, error: 0x80040154 (class not registered)" was displayed on the main DVBViewer window. No video can be viewed. Selecting any of the scanned channels, as well as shutting down the program and starting it again, resulted in the same error message displayed.

I have no clue on what caused this error message and no idea on what & how to deal with it. Can anyone help me?

Thanks in advance.

I'm in HK and thinking of buying the DVBViewer program to work with my AVer A855 USB tuner. But I'd like to keep using the tiny remote that comes with the package. Would it still work with DVBViewer?
