UPNP Improvement

I think that UPNP/DLNA is the future in home multimedia entarteinement and i think also that DVBViewer is the best software for watch and record TV. So, why don't merge them?

Recording Service is good product but i think is possible to improve it.

What is missing for me?

1 - Is not possible to share pictures and music.

2 - Is not possible to share EPG

3 - Is not possible to manage and organize UPNP folders

4 - Is not possible to use tasks

5 - Is not possible to transcoding video

In my opinion this suggestions can bring DVBViewer on the top of Mediacenter/decoder software because after that will be possible to use it with almost every Multimedia player, TV, mobile and other stuff.

But the main goal is develop DVBViewer thinking to use it with a Control Point (like iPhone with PlugPlayer) and a Media Renderer like another instance of DVBViewer or stuff previously mentioned.

 

Have i asked to much?

It was actually very pleasant suprise for me to find UPNP/DLNA feature exists in DVBViewer. I wasn't aware of it until recently and BANG it just been working nicely with my Samsung C650 TV. Streaming of SD and HD channels to TV is a nice addition to program. However there are two imperfections that draw my attention straight away:

 

1. Navigation. Favourite channels folder is excluded from offerings. It's almost impossible to pick up channel I want from list of thousands using remote control. Direct access to favourite list would make the selection much easier.

2. Delay. It usually takes about ~20s from moment of selecting channel till actual picture appears on TV. Quite annoying, perhaps a technological limitation I don't know.

 

I am on recording service 1.6.0.0.

I fixed problem N1 organizing all the sat channel in folders inside DVBViewer

When i use my PS3 to watch streaming TV, i navigate in TV->All channels->Folder that contains all my favorite channels. It works good and if you have also added the TV logos is very cool

 

Problem N2 is a big problem because it is impossible to make zapping

Hi I've owned DVBViewer for quite some time now but never got around to actually playing around with it much except for basic setup.

 

Recently I decided to make home automation a priority and I was contemplating a tabletPC for this with something like Andromote as an app with regards to DLNA based media serving (how cool is an app that lets you decide where you want to render your media!)

 

Then I saw this very interesting WP7 project (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XM0Apbn6dXY&feature=player_embedded) but that is MCE based and does not give me the opportunity for live streaming of my DVB-S2 tuners.

 

And now I ended up here to find that I might already have an essential tool at hand and that shipoftrip has come to the same conclusion as I (and probably many others) have: there should be an app (Android, WM6, WP7 and/or Iphone based) to allow us to control the DVBViewer DLNA functionality from our phones/tablets!

 

But just to make sure (as I have not yet played with the recording service):

do I understand correctly that through the current implementation of DLNA in recording service 1.6.0.0 we can stream both live and recorded video to our DLNA-enabled devices?? If so, an app like the one we just described should definitely be developed!

 

If we can couple such an app together with IR (BT or Wifi to IrDA comes to mind) remote control of our audio and display devices in a tablet for instance, than we would have a limitless universal remote on our hands

Well I'm using the recording service to stream to a Samsung TV, a PS3, a popcornhour 100, a popcornhour A200, an ipod, an iPad, a xtreamer and a kiss 1600 mediaplayer (and xbmc on the PC).

Cool, but then why on earth did they come up with the unfortunate name of "recording service"

Maybe at first that's what it was, but if it has evolved to a service that also streams live tv, another name might be more appropriate

 

I've also found the thread about the Iphone/Ipod/Ipad support (http://www.DVBViewer.tv/forum/topic/38858-iphoneipod-touch-support/) and it looks to me you can stream to each of the devices you mentioned, but it also seems to me you can not simply use the iPhone as a "remote control" for the recording service to your other devices. By this I mean for example that you run the recording service from your server, select a video from that server through your iPhone and select on which platform (Samsung TV, PS3, ...) you want to render the video as demonstrated by Andromote (http://thedigitallifestyle.com/cs/TDL/b/extra/archive/2009/06/28/streaming-content-from-windows-media-center-with-an-g1-android-phone.aspx)

 

Besides that, is there any chance that something similar would be developed for WM6/WP7 or Android based systems?

I still have to decide which way to go, but I know that I would like to avoig going the iPhone/iPad route... (just a matter of personal preference)

I'm no Android specialist by a long shot. Just exploring my options at the moment. It's a toss-up between an android 3.0 device (should offer better UI than 2.2 Froyo) and Wp7 device. And I can definitely understand that you're not willing to purchase another device just for testing purposes. If you had to do that for every crazy idea that comes along here, you'd be bankrupt in no time

Just stick to the iPhone if you're happy with it it is just as great for UPnP control I would imagine.

 

The downside to Wp7 devices is that I can't imagine any of them having an IrDA anymore so if you also want to use it as an IR remote besides using it as a UPnP AV controller, you'll have to also purchase a BT to IR (haven't found this yet) or Wifi to IR device.

 

The downside to the current Windows mobile 6.1 on my HTC P3600 is that you can use it as IR device, but as a UPnP controller, with its limited screen size and crappy UI, it won't be so appealing...

Still with my UPNP request

Now that DVBVRS is grown i have other suggestions:

Tasks in the web interface for iphone are useful but i think will be better if tasks are sharable using UPNP. If so, in the next time will be possible to assign a single task to a Control Point, for example Channel+, Channel- or VolumeUP and VolumeDown.

 

My target is to control every AV in my home with a UPNP remote.

I think will be possible in some cases using something like this or this where a RS232 connection will be available.

But, for do that of course tasks are needed.

 

Another suggestion,

Let DVBViewer be a UPNP Renderer

I am using SVC 1.9.3.0. DLNA/UPnP works quite well with my two streamers - Asus HDP-R1 and Sony SMP-N200.

 

I am planning to get a new LG TV soon. LG suggest installing Plex (www.plexapp.com). This provides compliant DLNA devices with an enhanced front-end.

 

Will it be possible for the next SVC to have a similar DLNA front-end that interfaces with internet content to provide a content-rich experience?

Perhaps these features are also related to the new v5 DVBViewer?

The feature SVC has that Plex does not appear to have is ability to stream live TV from the tuner cards.

Would prefer to just run SVC on my mediacentre, rather than SVC and something else like Plex...

I want to make my m4a files available to my two streamers (an Asus HDP-R1 and Sony SMP-N200).

Currently, both only see mp3 files.

Using network link to the server, I can play the m4a files on both streamers no problem.

 

Searching the forum, I think I need to add something like this to upnpprofilesv2.xml, but it breaks the file and service when added...

What do I need to add please?

You should add the m4a lines to the default profile in the xml file:

This should work (after the next media library update run), if the client accepts m4a as mp3 files...

Yes, but it depends on the UPnP client if it can handle the (compared to video) low datarate. Most clients do have problems because they have too big internal buffers and these wont fill with the "few" bytes of music...

No. It lists all recordings in the recordings database.

I will try adding the code you suggest, but it stopped all files being available through UPnP when added last time... I will try again and see what happens...

 

My recorded tv only lists unwatched programmes, so is there a db file or similar I can delete to force the database to refresh?

Great - now m4a (as mp3) files are working on the Sony and it can see full list of recorded tv shows.

 

I posted another question in a different place on the forum.

Would be great if you can help with this - not urgent, just nice to have if its possible.

I purchased a new LG ST600 streamer yesterday.

I wanted to check the LG hardware works with my DVBViewer server before I buy a new LG Plasma/LED smart TV later this year.

 

The LG ST600 does some clever things, like creating thumbs of all video files (apart from wtv) somehow.

It pulls in related music coverart from its internet connection. It has this whole Plex metadata service I havent tried yet.

It somehow finds and shows channel logos for live TV channels.

 

The basic functionality is not so good...

 

It can see and play .ts MPEG2 files and live TV channels.

It can see but cannot play .ts MPEG4 h264 files - error is video resolution unsupported.

It can see but cannot play .m4a files (which I now have mimed as mp3, as above for my Sony streamer).

 

What can I do to get the video files and live TV HD channels working on the LG ST600 please?

Do I need to add a mime for h264 files to some other container perhaps?

- Since flashing the firmware yesterday, I can now play avi and Mkv files over DLNA.

Not sure what piece of code I would need for such a mime, but at least I know which file to copy/paste into

 

Any help appreciated, otherwise I think I swap the ST600 for another Sony streamer and keep any new LG TV on a long HDMI cable!

Ignore my last post - I spoke to LG Technical who kinda told me there no currently working codec for MPEG4 H264 video (file or stream) on the ST600.

Guess they will sort this out with a firmware update eventually...

I gave up and returned the ST600. Going to a buy another Sony SMP-N200 that we got fully working with DVBViewer
