about USB IR recievers

I have bought a IR (infra red) reciever and I wanna use it for controlling DVBViewer. As I have read in different forums it seems that USB versions don't work correctly for remote controlling

I am currently using it with my cell phone

 

Can anyone explain me? Is it possible to configure it with Girder or other programs??

Is it an IrDA Receiver?? Than it is very difficult, because that one is not suitable for the Remote.

As far as I know in irda-receivers the receiving-logic is build in. and it is different from that of ir-remotecontrols. thats why it is difficult. maybe out there is a solution, but I don't know of such a thing.

That sounds very good (e.g. for Notebooks without a COM-port). I think, I will build it, too.

(...But it seems to be a little bit demanding. )

Well. It doesn't look THAT difficult. If you put the ic on a socket it should be possible to complete such a task.

this is very easy to create. And look at the pictures. The result seems to be very small. But it's not for USB.
