Bigger Dish for BBC HD required?

The BBC will change on 06-06-2011 the modulation of transponder 10802H on Astra 2D from DVB-S, 5/6 to DVB-S2, QPSK, 8/9. The capacity will be increased by 15% which can be used for better quality (or more channels ).

 

Currently an Eb/No of 6dB is required for quasi error free reception. After the change this will be slightly increased to 6,2dB. In terms of dish area 0.2dB corresponds to a 5% bigger dish or a 2% increase in diameter. Astra 2D is a spot beam satellite. For GB or areas where only a small dish is required there won't be a noticeable degradation. It could be different in areas with marginal reception (e.g. eastern Germany). A marginal reception of the dvb-s transponder with 120cm could suffer after switching to dvb-s2 cos for the same performance as before a dish with 123cm will be required.

I took the wrong values. On the contrary in this case dvb-s2, qpsk, 8/9 will show a slightly better error performance than dvb-s, 5/6. So don't worry

No problem with my 45 cm dish here (West Germany, North Rhine-Westphalia).

..your area is not concerned. But for marginal reception there could be problems because with a higher symbolrate the carrier to noise ratio will drop.
