Oliver
World Community Grid - Distributed ComputingSome of you may have heard about distributed computing. Several people support - either as a lone wolf or as member of a team - scientific and/or medical research by providing surplus computing power. In this field there are more or less meaningful or worthwhile projects.I have founded the DVBViewer team at World Community Grid (WCG) (http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/). The available projects address exclusively medical and environmental research, i.e. no abstact mathematical problems. To participate you only need a client, I use BOINC from http://boinc.berkeley.edu/. There is a download link at the WCG homepage, but that's an older release. I advise to you always use the latest version which supports GPU computing (provided the chosen project offers this, like "help conquer cancer").Step-by-step guide: Download the BOINC client at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php and install it. Setup the client. At "tools" you can set some options and preferences, for example when and now to use the CPU/GPU. Create an account at WCG: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/reg/viewRegister.do Select one or more projects you want to participate in. At the moment you can choose from Say No to Schistosoma GO Fight Against Malaria Drug Search for Leishmaniasis The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2 Help Conquer Cancer Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2 FightAIDS@Home Setup the BOINC client: Add WCG as a project. Open "tools" and select "add project or account manager. In the next window click at "add project" and select "World Community Grid" from the list. Now choose "yes, existing user" and type in your credentials from no. 3 above. Click at the "projects" tab. You should see "World Community Grid". Now select "my grid" and search for "DVBViewer" at "find a team". Alternatively You can find the team homepage here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=CP735GM412 So, that was it. You can start crunshing numbers by clickling "update" in the BOINC client, in the team column there should be "DVBViewer". I'd be happy to establish a DVBViewer team and hope for active cooperation. At the moment I am participating in the "help conquer cancer" project, but as mentioned before, there are several others to choose from. 4 Quote Link to comment
DunnoX
How is this different from folding@home I already have it installed on my 24/7 computer. Quote Link to comment
Oliver
It's basically the same, although folding@home uses its own client. BOINC is a management client that supports multiple projects. Quote Link to comment

Oliver
Oliver
So, the last of the work units for the Help Conquer Cancer project have been distributed, meaning this research project is finished. The DVBViewer team took part in the "Kill Cancer! - CO Challenge 10", too, and came in 13th of 48 participating teams. All together the DVBViewer team has already accumulated more than 1 year computing time. In the foreseeable future I personally will take part in the projects "Human Proteome Folding" and "The Clean Energy Project". Quote Link to comment
Oliver
So, about one month later our team have accumulated over 2 years of computing time. Meanwhile the "Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2" project has been completed as well. But there are still several projects to choose from. Also, new projects have been announced. On a side note : We'd be happy to welcome new members to our team. Quote Link to comment
