SeaSat
There is a new 8k demo channel on Astra 28.2E 11,973-31,000-V-9/10-8PSK. I can tune into it with the average data flow of 80Mbits/sec, resolution 7680x4320p, 50 fps, 4:2:0. While DVB Source filter seems to be processing the stream fine no such luck with HEVC decoder. I tried both LAV 0.7.1 filters and Lentoid 2.2.0.0. Occasionally the former produced a random picture and sound the latter just crashed DVBViewer Pro. Somebody suggested to increase HEVCBufferSize=4096 in DVBSource.ini but it had no effect. The CPU/GPU load is rather low so I suspect that neither HEVC decoder is able to decompress the stream. Working UHD/4k stream taxes the CPU/GPU at 10%/40% respectively. Is there anything else to try? Apparently PowerDVD has a very good HEVC H.265 filter built in but the free demo version goes only up to 4k. My workstation configuration is fairly decent satellite card TBS 6925, CPU Ci9-9990K, 32 GB RAM, RTX-2080 so should be able to process the stream. 1 Quote Link to comment
kmfan
I can play my recording with MPC BE, but I have no GPU with h.265 hardware decoding, so it's played back super slow, like watching it frame by frame. Your PC should do it just fine. SeaSat
Thanks for the tip kmfan- indeed a recorded 8k stream plays fine on my PC. Even VLC is up to this task with CPU load at 15% and GPU 60% perfectly smooth only occasionally it looses a frame. However I cannot figure out how to play live 8k stream in DVBViewer? Since the stream can be recorded the DVBsource is working fine but the decoder does not process any data as the CPU/GPU load is well below 5%. Quote Link to comment

Unfortunately I can't receive the 11937 V transponder properly here (western part of Germany). The stream is heavily disturbed, though all other Astra 28.2°E transponders can be received without problems. Either the signal is to weak, or my DVB devices can't cope with the high data rate. I've tried a DVBSky S960 USB connected to a 45 cm dish and a Hauppauge Nova S2 HD PCI connected to a 60 cm dish. My old Technotrend S2-3600 USB delivers no data at all. Quote Link to comment

SeaSat
@Griga I had to check it and unsurprisingly 8k recorded stream does not play in DVBViewer. There is another 8k Demo channel at HotBird 13.0E "Roland Garros 8k" 11,219-27500-H-9/10-8PSK. At this stage I am not sure if 8k does not play because of DVBViewer or filter/decoder configuration? I would like to include it in my sample collection and try playback myself. 9 hours ago, SeaSat said: At this stage I am not sure if 8k does not play because of DVBViewer or filter/decoder configuration? I'm not sure if memory is sufficient for 8k. A 32 bit application can't use more than 4 GB. An uncompressed 8k frame occupies 7,680 x 4,320 x 4 = 132,710,400 Bytes = 126.6 MB, or even more in case of 10 bit color depth. Several frames may queue up in the video renderer, waiting for their presentation time. 10 hours ago, SeaSat said: There is another 8k Demo channel at HotBird 13.0E I can't receiver it either with my small dish. SeaSat
Bingo! It is the 32-bit nature of DVBViewer that stops it from playing the 8k stream. With 32-bit VLC 3.0.6 I got only sound while 64-bit version works fine. The strange thing though the 64-bit VLC footprint in RAM when playing 8k is 1.3 GBytes well short of the hard limit? SeaSat
Finally I succeeded in watching 8k live with DVBViewer after passing DVBS to NetStream plugin bound to localhost and picking it on the VLC player. In the plugin configuration the default Buffercount of 100 must be increased tenfold. The general consensus for alternative players is that only the streaming workaround works at this moment since there is no suitable consumer filter to decode 8k. PowerDVD 19 Ultra may contain such filter but I am not spending €100 on it. Quote Link to comment

kmfan
I use only winrar and the password is ok. If there is an update you should update 7zip. Quote Link to comment
Griga
No luck with the recent 7-Zip version. The error message pops up in the middle of the unpacking process. The first data block seems to be ok, but then 7-zip stops and can't go on. Quote Link to comment
HaraldL
It is one big file across all parts. Extract works only without error if all 7 parts are present. In WinRAR I tested with first 2 parts, here I can select "keep broken files" on extract, resulting in a partial .ts file (which nearly froze my i7-920 pc completely when opened in VLC 3.0.7 x64, needed about 5 minutes after stopping with Alt-F4 to respond again). Griga
6 hours ago, HaraldL said: Extract works only without error if all 7 parts are present. You are right. It also applies to 7-zip and prevents the misleading error message. The file can be played here with DVBViewer on a PC with a i7-3770 CPU, but not fluently. It's more or less stop and go. It may work better with a graphics card that fully supports 8k HEVC decoding (that I don't have). However, due to memory restrictions hardware decoders may refuse to decode 8k if they are used by a 32 bit application, as the LAV Filters developer told me. I've used the following options in DVBViewer: DirectX -> Renderer/Decoder -> Video -> Video Renderer -> EVR Enhanced Video Renderer (the EVR Custom may refuse to display the pictures if they arrive after their presentation time). DirectX -> Renderer/Decoder -> Video -> HEVC Decoder -> Cyberlink Video Decoder (PDVD Generic) from a Power DVD trial version. The Lentoid Decoder doesn't seem to be able to decode 8k. The 32 bit LAV Video Decoder (based on FFmpeg) is far too slow if it can't use hardware acceleration. 64 bit decoders can't be used in DVBViewer. DirectX -> DVBViewer Filter -> Use DVBViewer Filter for *.ts off. This will let the LAV Source Filter take over for file playback (not for live), if installed. It may be advantageous in this very case because the HEVC video access units are not aligned to the PES packets, as the Header Info function of the TransEdit Analyzer shows. The DVBViewer Filter passes PES packets to the decoder, the LAV Source Filter extracts the video frames before passing the data on. However, it shouldn't matter if the Cyberlink Decoder is used, because it does all the parsing itself. If you play with these settings, please remember that you have changed them, because they may be disadvantageous in other cases. Quote Link to comment
craig_s
Thanks @kmfan for the upload. First + fast: here on a GTX 1070 i play your file fluently using MPC-HC x64/ MPC-BE x64 at average 4% CPU usage (MPC-HC: LAV Filters, Renderer EVR-Custom / madVR). The x86 versions of the same players show different kinds of endless replays or crashes near 100% CPU. I tried multiple filter combos - no x86 success. Using DVBViewer the same. I'm pretty sure this is once again a DVBViewer hint to finally update to 64-Bit? Edited June 9, 2019 by craig_s Quote Link to comment
craig_s
@kmfan, @SeaSat since the process to turn DVBViewer to 64-bit will need a long time i can only recommend you to try meanwhile the 64-bit vers. of ProgDVB. Would be interesting to hear if the 8k works there. Quote Link to comment
SeaSat
@craig_s I briefly played with ProgDVB x64 as you recommended. The free version does not support Unicable LNB since this option is missing on the drop down menu. In contrast DVBViewer has no issue with Unicable LNB on TBS6925. The Pro version silently crashes at launch with no error message. I was hoping to register for a trial but cannot get that far. Edited June 9, 2019 by SeaSat Quote Link to comment
craig_s
Strange, i don't even know what LNB i have, ProgDVB worked automatically with some 'KU Band Universal' on TBS 5520. But no Astra 28.2E here. SES on 19.2E is paused at the moment. Switching to 8k? Quote Link to comment
