Within the home network yes, but usually not over the internet. Sat>IP is designed for home/corporate networks. It entails a bunch of different protocols (TCP for the control channel, UDP Multicast for detection mechanisms, UDP for video/audio...) and your router will probably block some of it. Even if it doesn't, forwarding all relevant ports (not only 554) is risky, because there is no password protection and encryption whatsoever. For attackers/abusers/hackers it's easy to find such unprotected servers in the internet and do everything they want with it.

You have the following options:

  • Use RTSP via a VPN. However, this will require a VPN software that fully supports all Sat>IP protocols/mechanisms.
  • Use the DMS Web Server with password protected HTTP (which - in a nutshell - means setting up a password and enable internet access in the DMS Options -> Web Settings, forwarding port 8089, downloading the channel list as M3U at the client location and using the TS Stream reception type). Even that is not completely safe, because the data transfer is unencrypted and prone to man-in-the-middle attacks. Encrypted HTTPS will be supported by the next DMS major release.
  • Use HTTP via a VPN, which is usually safe.
