Aardvark1 Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 Hi, I would like to be able to watch TV remotely (in the same way as is possible with Slingbox and Sony Wirefree) across the internet. Is it possible to set up DVBViewer to do this? If it is what is the quality. One thing I thought about is using a VPN conenction between both local and remote machines and trying to set up as a normal netstream. I guess though with a bandwidth limit of around 300k this might be a problem. Any thoughts/experiences? Quote
Benarty Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 Accross the internet? This will not work properly, too much bandwidth needed for the mpeg2 signal. So, this wil llead to many stream errors causing very huge mpeg errors to even no video. What works, use a higher compression algorithm like mpeg4. But the problem is: converting mpeg2 to mpeg4 creates quality loss and simple the higher compression rate will also lead to quality loss. So bottom line: don't expect too much from it. Across an intranet works. Quote
Tjod Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 You could try ASFStreaming from Webserver Control. Quote
Benarty Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 (edited) ASFstreaming can also lead to stream problems accros the internet. The problem with the internet is that it has it typical delays, connection problems, short to very long routing...signals don't take the most straight route but may go around the globe which affects the risk to loose the stream again. And if connected to a specific router that passes the data to another and so and the router decides that it's overloaded then there will be a routing hop. Such hops cause a small delay, not important for internet use, but noticable for streaming connections. That's why they use stream buffers. buffer size has to increase alot if the source file is long (short clicp less buffer, movie large buffer) There's also a legal issue involved. So if you send video then it has to be via e secured tunnel connection so that you only and not the rest of the world can view the video. Edited October 8, 2007 by Benarty Quote
Aardvark1 Posted October 8, 2007 Author Posted October 8, 2007 I appreciatte there will be a loss of quality, but options are to buy a slingbox or try to use what I already have. Not sure about the legal issue side, I was suggesting streaming across my VPN connections so hopefully that's secure! Quote
Moses Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 (edited) VPN can be considered as quite secure. It should "work" with the afsplugin... but the image and sound quality will be awfully.. just try arround a bit. The new setup allows to install it automatically (you can also modify an existing setup). And it is configured via the webinterface. Edited October 8, 2007 by Moses Quote
Benarty Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 You will not have a stable situation. if you connect from X to Y on the internet then this not mean that the signal will follow the direct route. Routing depends on the internet routers so signal can pass a almost straight connection but the signal can also go around the world even when X and Y are for instance just 10KM from each other. Longer the signal part, higher the error rate. There is only one way to know if this works: test it. Image quality, converting mpeg2 to another compression algorithm is a trival task which leads to higher quality loss compared to a not compressed video to mpeg conversion. Another trick is to drop down the resolution. And sure not forget: VPN if you stream in public, that's illegal. Quote
