Danish subtitles again, again

Since I announced in a Danish HTPC forum, that DVBViewer could play both kind of subtitles from a recorded file there has been a big interest for DVBViwer!

Once set up properly, we (and the rest of our family) want to use DVBViewer in the living room, controlling everything via the remote control and the OSD.

No one can see there is a penguin inside :bye: .

DVBViewer is excellent for that, but these messy Danish subtitles still make some trouble.

We have the following requests (I posted the requests in the Danish forum first):

General requests:

1. The ability to select DVB subtitles and teletext subtitles together.

Subtitles in Denmark really are messy. The News, many Documentaries and some Movies toggles between the two types of subtitles within the same TV program. That is, if you select one type you miss the other type.

From a users point of view check boxes in stead of radiobuttons in the Subtitle Menu would do.

2. Remembering, for each channel, the teletext subtitle page number and remembering whether teletext subtitles is wanted enabled.

The subtitles page number is not the same for all channels. Tuning to a new channel often results in the need for setting up teletext subtitles again.

3. Using the information from 2. when playing a recorded file.

Just an idea: When playing a recorded file, the channel can be retrieved from the info file.

4. Timeshift and subtitle support.

We know this has been discussed in the forum, and that you can select "Record" instead of "Pause".

Understand, that this is a very hard nut. Please consider anyway.... Maybe some day.

OSD requests

5. The possibility for a "Subtitles" entry in the main menu.

In Options/OSD General/OSD Menu : Subtitles Window, Home Window. Should probably be unchecked by default.

Maybe teletext subtitles setup is enough since you can check Options/Subtitles/Enable If available for DVB subtitles.

This request is not that important if 2. and 3. is fullfilled. All would be nice though (i.e. you want to change language).

6. The posibility for having the OSD Zoom entry in the main window.

Sometimes the following is done: A movie in 16:9 format is supplied with black boxes at the top and the bottom. Then it is sent in 4:3!

This results in black borders all the way round on a 16:9 screen. Watching analog TV and trying to zoom on the TV remote results in subtitles disapearing out of the screen.

This is not so for DVBViewer! Subs (both types) stays where they should be. The Zoom window deserves a place in front!

7. Recording from Timeline window. Not subtitle related!

Pressing the red button on the remote gives a red spot on the selected TV program. Pressing red button once more sends a second object to the PVR.

Shouldn't the second press on red button mean "Unrecord", i. e. remove the object from the PVR?

It is not always we get the red spot even if the object is sent to the PVR.

Maybe we are missing something here? The two of us, who has noticed this, are using myXMLTV for EPG.

Thanks in advance for considering

ok for now just short answers:

1. not in the near future. but you could tell your stations to f*** decide for one system ;)

2. there have been some changes, so this won't be in the next beta, but it will be considered :bye:

3. not possible, cause even in a ts-file there are not enough information to identify a channel and relate it with the saved data.

4. Internal Betatests are on the way. some really heavy changes took place, will be in the next beta.

5. will come with the changes from 4.

6. ?? simply put it where you want it, thats what the options -> osdmenu stuff is for....

7. It only says record not unrecord :( honestly it's easy sending a entry to the timers but the way back is a real hard one...

Hi Lars!

Thanks for the fast and positive answers. Especially the 4. and 5. looks great. We definatly don't want to leave the couch. :D

1. Agree! It is a mess! Lets wait and see what they do. Hoped it was easy (newer is though, you say).

Maybe another approach: In Denmark (analog TV and the STB (if mixed subs)) we hit the teletext button and then go to the subtitle page to watch subtitles.

Only the subtitles is seen, the rest of the page is transparent.

This is partly possible in DVBViewer too (OSD teletext), but the subtitle teletext page is not transparent (can make it partly transparent).

To say one good thing about my stations (DR,TV2) : The teletext subs are for hearing impaired persons. This is offered for allmost any TV program with Danish speach.

Canal+ use teletext subs (not mixed)

2. ;)

3. If you say it is impossible I believe you. Maybe I didn't make myself clear enough. I thought of something like this:

a. The user selects to play a recording, say Movie.ts

b. In the same folder (assuming this option is selected) is an info file Movie.txt. DVBViwer can read the channel from this file.

c. Use the stored info from request 2. to set teletext options as wanted by the user for that channel.

4. :(

5. :(

6. Obviously didn't try hard enough. :bye:

7. What I meant was, that the red button option should change to UnRecord ;) (a better word is needed?).

Would it as another solution be possible to check that only one object of the same recording request can be sent to the timer?

We all know the situation when novice PC users hit the print button 4 times or more just to be sure.

Looking forward to the next version(s). :)

Hi Lars!

Just downloaded the new beta a coupple of hours ago.

Thank you for fullfilling request number 1!!!!!!

If "not in the near future" means the next day, where will it end? ;)

It works perfectly, even on playback of a recorded file. (w00t)

The new subtitle menu is really an improvement.

There is a minor issue about the visual appearence of the menu, I think (don't want to start a new thread in beta section for that):

I have Settings/Options/Subtitles/Enable if available checked and will probably never change that.

Calling the subtitle menu, the menu item DVB:Danish is then of course checked.

I then select Teletext 399 and I get both types!!

The menu item DVB:Danish is no longer checked. Suggestion: Put checkmarks on both menu items. B)

I guess its probably not just that easy, but it is proven that both types displays very well together.

I tested on a documentary about criminals. The interviewer had teletext subs and the criminals had DVB subs ???????? :bye::):blink:

The new beta looks nice, but it is becomming late. :bye:

Well I'm not sure how this can be, this seem to be a kind of a bug (in some way) :bye: . But hey, at least it is a useful bug :)

A very usefull bug indeed :bye: . Later today there are some documentaries, which probably have mixed subs. It is of course needed to test the timeshift together with this new "feature". I shall report my results.
