Can recordings be made smaller?

Hi

I have just invested in a Netgear EVA700 which allows me to watch videos from my PC on my TV (it streams them).

If I download TV recordings from the internet, these stream perfectly because they have already been reduced in size. If, however, I tried to stream a recording that DVBViewer has made it stutters because the file is too "big" (not overall size but the streaming rate is too high).

Is there a way of changing the settings in DVBViewer to record the files smaller? I know I could compress them some other way but it rather defeats the object (I may as well download it!).

BTW I read mixed reviews about the EVA700 - all I would say is GET IT - it is fantastic! It is a bit rough round the edges but it does a great job. I didn't have any problems getting it up and running (about 10 mins) - one tip: don't install the resource CD, just install Windows Media Player 11 (if you haven't got it already) and it drives it without any problems (at least for me!)

Thanks.

You get what the broadcasters send. If the gadget can't handle normal ts streams or mpeg2, it's the problem of the device not of the DVBViewer. Get a device which can handle mpeg2 streams correctly and not an toy :bye:

how is that thing connected to your network? If it's WLAN you should try wired LAN instead and see if that works better..

if it really can't play normal TS streams, I do as Lars said... :bye:

If you really want to stick to that thing, you could try VLC and stream the recordings with lower bitrates... as far as I know VLC it could work, but I nerver tested it ;)

The Netgear EVA700 (link) IMO is definitively not a toy, but a clever and actractive DigitalMediaPlayer, full of functions (it can play also Internet radio :))... please take a more deep look on its funcions and specs... IMHO the real cons is the relatively high price (for me not so different from a DIY but complete PC, but at least the EVA700 don't have a single fan!)...

This are the Video format managed:

• MPEG-1 VCD format (1.15 Mbps CBR)

SD and HD MPEG-2 up to 15 Mbps (using MPEG Audio, AC3, DTS audio formats)

• SD and HD MPEG-4 (OpenDivX3, 4, 5.11, XviD)

• SD and HD WMV9 (using WMA audio codec)

• AVI audio codec: MP3, AC3, PCM, WMA, Ogg

• MOV: 3ivX + MP3, 3ivX + PCM (3ivX converted from supported MPEG-4 video codec using Dr. DivX II for MAC OS)

• MP4: MP4V + MP4A (AAC) (only support non-hinted MP4)

• Subtitle (MicroDVD, SubRip, Sub Station Alpha, Sami)

...but the mentioned top MPEG-2 stream can be correctly managed only if it's LAN connected, as admitted by Netgear itself, "unfortunately" only in the FAQ :bye: (link, see question #9)...

Anyhow, if you want an alternative to wireless and you won't cable your home, Netgear itself sell a Power Ethernet Adapter (HDX101, link) that can transform your house power line in up to 200 Mbps LAN...

;)

PS: Sorry for such a kind of Netgear spot ;)

Sorry, I should gave pointed out - yes it is a wireless link hence the need to make the bitrate lower.

Wireless isn't reliable enough for broadcast quality recording and it'll become more of a problem as more people get wireless in the home - the best way for distrubuted TV is still wired.

You'll have to use conversion software like the excellent AutoGK to downgrade your broadcast recording

AFAIK not with DVBViewer itself... but you can do it later...

You can reduce the data rate of a recorded file (that's your problem with a EVA700 wireless connected) re-encoding it in MPEG2 itself with less resolution/more compression but you have to lose form some to a big deal of quality, and can be a very time consuming task; or you can transcode in a more compressed format: your EVA700 can cope, as you know, at least with OpenDivX3, 4, 5.11, XviD and WMV9 and transcoding is normally less time consuming task and you don't have to lose as mutch quality as MPEG2 re-encoding...

I imagine you would prefer to transcode your recorded files ;) so you can use... a ton of tools, you only have to choose form very expensive payware to powerfull (but generally rough) freeware: have a look at the specific DVBViewer's Conversion & Encoding Forum Subforums (link), or at a specialized web site like www.videohelp.com or www.doom9.org...

Alas the performance of a WLAN 802.11a,b,g is too poor for live streaming of high quality dvb-s/s2 content. The new standard 802.11n will change this. Though the standard is backwards compatible existing gear can't be upgraded.

The only alternative would be to connect the EVA700 via a wired LAN :bye:
