zannad Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Is anyone out there with direct experience of DVBViewer in conjunction wiith the Hauppauge HVR3000? Bought that card only recently (5 days ago) and struggling to find the right package. The bundled WinTV skinks...it is incledibly buggy and looks like it was made in the pre-Windows 95 age!!! Tested various alternatives...DVBViewer works reasonably well from the very start but I'm not sure about a few points: 1)UK teletext for DVB-T won't work because it isn't supported 2)The Preview seems to be working only within the same transponder Point (1) seems to be unachievable at present. I've found out that even more expensive software (e.g. Powercinema5 doesn't support it). Regarding the preview...I get a hardware problem message when trying to switch to certain stations. Is this due to limitations within the card itself? If I buy DVBViewer, will I get a proper Preview (i.e. will allows me to navigate any channel at pleasure - both DVB-S and DVB-T without any glitches). Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Quote
Moses Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Could be a hardware limitation, too. I recently read that the HVR4000 can only tune DVB-S(2) or DVB-T, not both at the same time. I think the HVR3000 is the precedessor? If so, it could be that it has the same limitation and is no real dual tuner hardware. So you'll only get a "proper Preview", when you install either another DVB-T oder DVB-S device. Quote
zannad Posted November 15, 2007 Author Posted November 15, 2007 (edited) Probably I haven't described my problem properly... There is no problem jumping from DVB-S to DVB-T (and viceversa) in normal use (e.g. I can switch from BBC (UK-Terrestrial) to RAI (Italian-Satellite) without any glitches. The problem starts when I use the Preview...apparently its scope is limited within similar or nearby channels, e.g. if I am watching BBC1 and open the Preview, I can switch to BBC2 while the Preview is still tuned to BBC1...but I cannot switch to channels on a different frequency e.g. Channel 4 (DVB-T) nor any channel in DVB-S. So apparently the HVR can tune 2 channels at once if they are close by...(in fact, there is a Mosaic feature which allows to watch many channels at once). It seems that the scope of the Preview is very limited...or mayby I haven't found the right Codecs or maybe I need to learn a bit more about Multiplexers and the Graph Edit. Actually, I think I've got your point....but if that is the case, then to have a proper Preview one needs 4 tuners: 1 Main DVB-S 2 Preview DVB-S 3 Main DVB-T 4 Preview DVB-T As a complete noob I guess I got this wrong somehow...but if I buy an extra DVB-T card I can Preview without any problem from DVB-T to DVB-T and from DVB-S to DVB-T...but not from DVB-S to DVB-S. The same reasoning apply if I decide to buy a DVB-S card! In other words...I need another HVR3000!! Let's face it....proper "Universal" Preview doesn't come cheap! Or is there a trick I am missing? Moses Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 One tuner can only tune one frequency, that's a physical limit. DVBViewer enables you to view as much as possible at a time. So, if you have just one DVB-T tuner, and activate preview it will allow you to watch all the channels on the same frequency as the previewed channel. If you want to watch others, then you'll need a second DVB-T tuner in your system. It's similar with recordings: if you have one tuner, you can record all the channels that are on one frequency at once. It's no matter for DVBViewer. But you won't be able to watch / record channels on another frequency, unless you have a second tuner. Theoretically with a multi-tuner system with one DVB-T tuner and one DVB-S tuner, you should be able to preview a DVB-T channel while watching a DVB-S channel. But it seems like the HVR3000 is not able to do that, because it's a "hybrid tuner" and no multi tuner device. So it's still one tuner, that can tune to DVB-S or DVB-T. A second HVR3000 will enable all possibilities for preview, but when it comes to recordings, there will, again, be restrictions, obviously. Quote
