giorusso Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 I'm wondering to renew my system and I'm asking to myself about an Intel CPU Quad or Duo...and which one could be lower in operative temperature ? Tnx. Quote
kata Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 The best choice for HTPC is Intel Core Duo T***0 (Yonah/Merom -> for Mobile). The heatsink of this CPU will be almost as cool as its ambient temperature and still cooler as the heatsink of Northbridge. You need a special MB for it. Perhaps Intel Celeron M (Yonah) will be enough? You may ask Moses for better advice. Quote
NeDrY Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 In general, every Core produces heat, so dual-core CPUs have a lower operating temp then quad-cores. I have a Intel E2180 (2,0 Ghz) and have 27°C in normal DVBViewer use. The highest temp I measured was 39°C. So a mobie CPU is not worth the money, at least if you donÄt use a special industrial power supply... Cheereo NeDrY Quote
Moses Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 maybe you should wait a few months until the core 2 dou is build in 45nm. Currently only the newest quad core QX9650 is produced in 45nm and is as cool as a dual core core 2 duo produced in 65nm, so you can expect even lower temperatures from the dual core in 45nm. Waiting for this change will be the best way to reduce temperatures in a HTPC. The mobile CPUs are quite nice, but it's very expensive and exotic hardware. So it's not possible to run vista stabel on my system with a mobile 2 desktop mainboard... XP runs ok, but the CPU has less power than the "original" core 2 duo. Quote

kata Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 The mobile CPUs are quite nice, but it's very expensiveI can get MB (ASUS N4L-VM DH) and Intel Core Duo T2450 (both new with guarantee) together for 228 Euro. What do you think about this noiseless and low power consumption setup? It seems to be compatible with Vista 32/64, only for the future of course. Quote
