XP Embedded - no xvid playback (using ffdshow)

i'm trying to build a set top box using DVBViewer and xp embedded.

 

so far so good until i got to video file playback. i installed ffdshow tryouts, and i can playback the video files in WMP 10, but in DVBViewer they just dont play at all. nothing happens.

 

also of note, is that the files dont generate thumbnails in explorer.

 

if i dual boot back into xp pro, running the same copy of DVBViewer and ffdshow, it works as expected, so i'm clearly missing something from my XPe install. but what is it? what function is DVBViewer trying to use to show the video files, that WMP 10 doesnt seem worried about.

 

i'd really appreciate any help on this, XPe using minlogon into DVBViewer is a very nice setup :)
