h.264 hardware acceleration with XP

Hi,

I am trying to enable hardware acceleration for h.264 on my 8500GT GPU. I'm running XP MCE with a 3Ghz P4 and currently my CPU is struggling with HD. I've read that using the GPU to do the h.264 decoding makes a huge difference. I know this is possible with Vista using EVR but wonder how I can do this with XP?

Can anyone provide instructions please.

Thanks.

..no problem. It depends on the video decoder and the graphical card. Some cards offer full acceleration support. Then your cpu remains mainly idle <_< Decoders like poverdvd (7 or 8) support dxva which reduces the cpu load. Imho your P4 needs full gpu acc.

The 8500GT supports hardware h.264. However, I think only the PowerDVD Ultra codec will enable it (not 7 or 8). I have read that this feature is only supported under Vista using EVR, but I have also read here that it will work with XP too. I definitely need gpu acc. I just don't want to buy PowerDVD ultra to find that it doesn't work.

So I guess it will work if I buy PowerDVD ultra. Correct? Do I need to make any changes in DVBViewer?

There is a trial version of cyberlink's PowerDVD 8. If you register the video decoder CL264.ax with the filter manager, it can be used by the DVBViewer. If it solves your problems, you can buy PDVD.
