PerryM Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 At the moment, SD recordings from Freesat are (by default) recorded as MPEG files, by converting from the broadcast transport stream on the fly. By contrast HD broadcasts are recorded as native .ts files. Is there any chance that (one day) we can have HD programmes recorded as MKV files? In the meantime, does anybody know of a utility that can change the .ts files to MKV without transcoding the video and audio content? Ideally it would also allow some edit trimming (a sort of ProjectX for H.264). Quote

There is a program included with Haali media splitter, GDSMux - this will convert .ts to .mkv without recoding - see 2nd post here. Edited May 15, 2009 by dvbrewer Quote
NanoBot Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 Another possible solution is the program package "mkvtoolnix", which is avaliable here: http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/ While mkvtoolnix is much more flexible then GDSMux when creating mkv files, is also has one disadvantage: Is does not accept as ts as source file. So you would first have to demultiplex your ts into elementary streams ( e.g. h.264 and ac3 ) Quote
PerryM Posted May 16, 2009 Author Posted May 16, 2009 There is a program included with Haali media splitter, GDSMux - this will convert .ts to .mkv without recoding - see 2nd post here. I've tried this GDSMux program, it appears to work and produce a mkv file but it won't play on my media player. I can produce working mkv files by using AutoMKV but this transcodes and so takes much longer and must (potentially) lose quality. I need an expert to tell me what are the probable differences between the two MKV results that cause one to work and one not (both from the same recorded BBC HD TS file). There are no options on GDSMux, but maybe it needs the TS source file to be processed in some way first? Quote

PerryM Posted May 20, 2009 Author Posted May 20, 2009 Well by pure luck, I discovered that if I put my TS recording through 'Transport Stream Packet Editor' to top and tail it, then it also cleans it up so that it then WILL play on my Network Media Player. Looks like I don't need to transfer to MKV after all! Quote
