Recordings overlay closed by MHEG

Hi,

I'm using an EVR custom renderer.

When I put on the Recordings list overlay, it only stays on for maybe 3-5 seconds, not long enough to scroll through and find the programme I'm looking for. I think it's because when the recordings screen comes on, it disables the MHEG. But then the MHEG is reactivated, in the process closing the recordings overlay.

I think the same thing happens with the guide and other overlays too.

This isn't really user friendly - my wife doesn't know what's going on and thinks it's broken.

Well the Mheg takes over control and disables the regular OSD. The problem is there is absolutely no way to determine which kind of Mheg application is running. You can not tell if just the radio (with song, channel logo and newsbar) is active, the red button image is blinking on top, or the BBC main mheg application is shown. At the moment you have a chain like this:

Tune a channel -> check if Mheg data is transmitted -> send the content to the Mheg Engine -> Engine returns an Application started -> regular OSD is "disabled" and controls are forwarded to the Engine.

Since you have absolutely no chance to determine what exactly is rendered on the screen, the only possible solution might be to add a "close the engine button till the next start and give me the osd back" button.

I realise it's hard.

Ideally, how I'd like it to work is pretty much like teletext I guess.

I tune a chennal, DVBViewer knows MHEG is available but doesn't activate it. But there's a tag somewhere that says it is, so I can put a nice little icon in the MiniEPG window so I can see there is MHEG there if I want it.

Then there's a button on my remote I can press (for me, the teletext button would be fine as there isn't any 'old' teletext around for us any more) and when I press it, MHEG comes to life. I can live without 'press red' appearing in the corner of the screen as really I know it's available.

The only issue I can see for me with that is the 'press green' functionality that they seem to be starting to use, where, when watching a trailer for a forthcoming programme, a 'press green to add to timer list' button appears. I've seen this on UK Humax DVB-T2 boxes, I don't know how widely used it is outside that.

I guess it might be a long time before that kind of thing appears in DVBViewer.

I agree with uglyned. For me having MHEG deactivated by default and being able to swith it on and off (with e.g. the teletext button) would be great I only occasionally use it (BBC Formula 1) and its now in the way of my normall zapping routine (miniepg +/-)

Not having the 'press green/red' messages is something i can live with.

Since there are certainly users who would want it enabled by default so i guess it would have to be an option.

+1, that would be perfect for me too.

Was going to start a new topic but this is right on point for me so a big +1 :)

I also agree with the above and would just like to see MHEG work as on a regular TV/STB with r/g/y/b and a text/interactive button to load/exit with the regular OSD/info/EPG buttons working as normal and just r/g/y/b reserved for MHEG until it is activated.

A button to disable could be useful in the interim to allow OSD usage for miniEPG browsing and listening to radio etc.

I know the MHEG plugin was not expensive but in it's current format it feels counterintuitive. I have checked both my Freeview TV/Freesat Foxsat-HDR and both allow you to view and use the OSD and use remote up, down, left, right etc as well as have MHEG application loaded/press red button visible. I assumed the OSD would just overlay separately on top of everything else so unless you have using BBC for example not pressed red to load then normal focus to OSD/miniEPG but if you have loaded MHEG remote focus only applied to the OSD overlay when activated with button press (not exactly a technical explanation I know) which would hopefully also stop it from closing your EPG window whilst your looking at it, to me this is how it apperas to work on TV/STB etc.

Cheers, B.
