djon Posted June 12, 2022 Posted June 12, 2022 1. I have been happily using Recording Service 1.33 for many years and knew nothing about the new Media Server. Would like to try it out, but what exactly is restricted in the restricted version in the members area? 2. The reason I was looking here was because I want to let my PC sleep when not recording anything. So I want it to suspend after recording something, but also to schedule it to wake up before scheduled recordings. Can this be done in my current recording service or does it need the Media Server? Also is there a client one can use to send a WOL command or something similar to wake up the PC so I can actually schedule recordings? I never watch Live TV, and the PC is not hooked up to anything but ethernet. Quote

All Recording Service / Media Server versions are able to wake the PC up for a scheduled recording. However, you can't schedule recordings with a remote device/PC when using Media Server Basic - see above. Quote
djon Posted June 12, 2022 Author Posted June 12, 2022 Does the recording service turn on the pc automatically before a recording or must something else be set up? I can only find settings to suspend the pc after recording something. Does it make entries on the task scheduler, because I can't see anything there. Quote
HaraldL Posted June 12, 2022 Posted June 12, 2022 The DMS wakes up the pc from suspend/hibernate state automatically without task manager. It cannot wake from fully shut down state (I think no software can and WOL only works from a different pc so useless here). So if you set all your timers to suspend/hibernate after recording the pc is put to sleep afterwards and waked up for the next. Nothing special has to be set up in windows, just avoid fully shutting down or power off the pc. Of course, if there are overlapping timers or a new one starts shortly after the current the pc is NOT put to sleep in between. I think the Recording Service could do the same but it was beta, is no more supported or updated since 2016 and if I remember correctly there were issues with changes in Win10 some years ago that are fixed in DMS but not in RS. So better make some short recording tests before using this productively and perhaps loosing recordings. Another point is you SHOULD NOT use a newer or current DVBViewer version with old RS as there were changes in communication and file formats that are only included in DMS full or restricted. Current version at the end of RS support was DVBViewer 5.6.4 I think. If you like the software you could support the developers by buying the DMS which you can use with the current DVBViewer and have an up to date installation with windows issues mitigation. The DMS can be installed just over the RS to take over the functionality and nearly all settings. Quote
Webturtle Posted June 12, 2022 Posted June 12, 2022 Hello, I think the DVBViewer Media Server (DMS) in the restricted version is the successor of the Recording Service (RS). It should have somewhat the same functions. To find out more you would have to use the search function. German postings can be easily translated into English with Google Translate. As far as I know, the computer can only be woken up at the programmed time, from whatever. A completely switched off rake can only be switched on with the power switch. I had already asked whether the computer could be switched on at the programmed time if it didn't reboot after a crash but was off. Many greetings Webturtle Quote

See the link in my post above. @Webturtle: Please don't confuse other users by posting information that you don't know sufficiently. djon Posted June 13, 2022 Author Posted June 13, 2022 Has anyone found a way to schedule recordings when the pc is sleeping? Does DMS have an interface or are there Android clients that can wake the pc from sleep so scheduling can be made and then set the pc to sleep again? Quote
Griga Posted June 13, 2022 Posted June 13, 2022 vor 6 Stunden schrieb djon: Does DMS have an interface or are there Android clients that can wake the pc from sleep Such an interface is technically impossible, because the server can't respond while the PC is sleeping. However, the DMS webinterface can be used to set the PC to sleep again. I'm sure that you will find some solution for waking the PC up with an Android device. Just search the web for Anroid and WOL. AFAIK the DVBViewer Controller supports WOL. Quote
djon Posted June 13, 2022 Author Posted June 13, 2022 I can't find anywhere in the recording service where to schedule it to wake up before a recording. It is in the recording service config right? I never use the main DVBViewer Pro application, it's not even started. If I upgrade to DMS, are the wake-up settings inside DMS and in no way dependant on DVBViewer Pro application or setting it up via an OSD? Does it have a web interface for programming it, like the http://ip/iPhone for the recording service? Quote
Griga Posted June 13, 2022 Posted June 13, 2022 vor 7 Minuten schrieb djon: I can't find anywhere in the recording service where to schedule it to wake up before a recording. I happens automatically. When Windows signals a transition to sleep or hibernate mode, the DMS sets up a wake up timer for the next recording. Just try... If it doesn't work, make sure that "Allow wake timers" is enabled in the Windows energy options. Quote
