Guide to setting codecs and DVBViewer up for noobs?

Hi,

Could someone help 1st time users (like me ) to set up Windows and DVBViewer by writing a small guide? (Something like the MediaPortal Install Guide)

  • what codecs to install for:
    • divx/xvid
    • mkv (H.264)
    • mp3/ogg(/wma)
    • hardware support (I personally have a ATI HD 3200)
    • srt support (inkl. hw support)
    • HD channel support

[*]how to set up the above and DVBViewer

[*]enable DVBViewer to wake up pc from standby to do recording (and go back to standby when done)

and optionally:

  • setting up the most popular plugins (or listing them and link to their respective threads)

I think that could help a lot of newbies and maybe take the load of the newbies forum and the DVBViewer support team.

Best regards,

Thomas Fogh

(Feel free to suggest more topics for the guide... ;))

Maybe I'll have a go at something more detailed but as a brief guide -

Xvid XVID for xvid and divx

Haali Matroska splitter helps DVBViewer open a MKV file Matroska Splitter

But it won't help play the contents.

H264 is complicated and not free. If you have an ATi HD card then maybe look at Cyberlink PowerDVD which has a h264 codec. CoreAVC is cheaper and works well with nVidia cards. There is a free trial of CoreAVC available so you can see if it works for you CoreAVC Website

For recording scheduling and wakeup you want the DVBViewer Recording Service. You'll find plenty about it on this site.

I use AC3Filter to decode channels with AC3 (Dolby 5.1) soundtracks. AC3Filter Site

Two more sites with good codec help Videohelp and Free Codecs

For H.264 you can use the mpc directshow codec, even supports dxva.: http://sourceforge.net/projects/mpc-hc/files/

Thanks, all! ;)

Does the MPC hardware acceleration also work with subtitles? What about the PowerDVD codec?

Which file should I download from MPC? There's a lot of files...

@amontillado: Your two plugins look great!

What about the PowerDVD codec?

PowerDVD ver. 9 won't work. They have changed the Codec from an all purpose Codec to a dedicated Codec. I think it is because the have started to sell a seperate Codec Pack

Version 8 works okay
