DVBViewer Media server and subtitles

Hi

I’m using the DVBViewer media server to stream .ts files previously recorded with DVBViewer to my Sony Bravia KDL32-EX403. The only problem is that I can’t see or switch on any DVB subtitles.

If I stream live TV to a DVBViewer client running on my laptop, the subtitles are there, and there are definitely subtitles in the .ts files.

I don’t think the lack of subtitles is a failing of DVBViewer, as I have tried other media servers with similar results. I suspect the Sony TV doesn’t process DVB subtitles unless they come from the internal tuner.

What I want to know is, is it possible for the DVB Media Server to transcode the .ts file as it’s played so that DVB subtitles are rendered as part of the stream? It doesn’t matter that they would always be on, there’s only one person in the house (me) that would ever want to switch them off. I’ve seen transcoding with VLC and FFMPEG mentioned in these forums, but I don’t know anything about these programs or if they could do the job.

Cheers

UPnP doesn't support DVB subtitles.

I tried the transcoding with DVB subtitles it didn't work (with ffmpeg). So no, it can't be done...

That's a shame. Thanks for trying. I know the AC Ryan Play!On HD box will do it (they ran a test with a couple of DVBViewer .ts files for me), but I was hoping to not add another box to the system

Cheers

..ts recordings are different from upnp streaming. I extract srt subtitle files from my HD recordings. They can be rendered by my popcorn hour.

I think that Nordic country's are "suffering" lot of from DVB subtitles. In other had it's good that you can choose used subtitle but for example upnp/ps3 is not good combination since there is no subtitles ...

What comes about ffmpeg and DVB subtitles I think that is can not show those.

You can use VLC for that, this example should work. Just pick correct language.

vlc.exe -Idummy Your_File.ts --sub-language fin :sout="#transcode{soverlay,vcodec=mp2v,vb=4000}:{dst=Your_File_with_subs.ts}"

Would be nice to have this conversion on demand since it's "boring" to transcode all files and it's also bit bad for picture quality also.
