majstang Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 It's time this bug gets it own thread. Hoping this one could be straighten out once and for all. What happens is when rightclick RS systray icon and choose Configure and then changing some setting and then ok and then repeat this pattern a number of times, service.xml suddenly gets wiped out and replaced by default settings. No other configfile seem to be affected only service.xml. This bug was introduced from 1.7 and on (never saw such behavior with earlier RS versions). This bug keeps happening despite me having a fresh Win7 32-bit install, so it is definitely a bug we have here. Please, let me know if I can help out with more clues in order to solve it
Lars_MQ Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Maybe you Antivirus program does cause this. I've never seen it.
majstang Posted May 23, 2011 Author Posted May 23, 2011 Maybe you Antivirus program does cause this. I've never seen it. You could be right! 25th of March I removed F-Secure 2010 and installed F-Secure 2011. RS 1.7 was released 17th of March and when backtracking my first issues with service.xml wipeout began to appear same day I did install FS2011. This according to this thread http://www.DVBViewer.tv/forum/topic/45075-rs-installer-overwrites-old-settings/ Your fixes regarding the security system for config files in RS 1.7.1 made it a whole lot better, so I thought. Change: Configuration files: Improved the Save strategy on Standby/hibernate to avoid defective files. Next service.xml wipeout was in May at first. I probably didnt do many RS configure changes in the time between, hence no problem. I will scrutinize my f-secure settings and report back. Thanks for leading me into the right direction...now it seems so obvious
majstang Posted May 23, 2011 Author Posted May 23, 2011 @Lars Might the RS systray utility be linked with process svcoptions.exe? That was the only RS related process found i the Deepguard advanced process surveillance, that was set to "Ask" instead of Allow (or Block). All other RS processes types was set to "Automatic", but not svcoptions.exe which still is set to "User".
Lars_MQ Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 I don't understand what you mean. The configuration program is a normal program and no service.
majstang Posted May 27, 2011 Author Posted May 27, 2011 (edited) I don't understand what you mean. The configuration program is a normal program and no service. Oh, sorry! I forgot to delete that post. It was late and I wasn't sure which RS files did what, but after more investigation i found out: - Recording Service Configuration = svcoptions.exe - Recording Service Tray Application = dvbvctrl.exe - Recording Service = dvbvservice.exe F-Secure Internet Security 2011 is set to default process monitoring "When a harmful program is found - If unclear, Ask me". What happened when installing RS was F-Secure did ask me about dvbvservice.exe and dvbctrl.exe right away (I "allowed" them both) and svcoptions.exe was set to "Ask" automatically without any notifyscreen. Problem was when the configuration process started I never got asked about what to do with this program ("Allow" or "Block"). It stayed in the "Ask" category indefinite. I suspect this was the reason for service.xml went back to defaults when the configuration program started. Peculiar thing though is it worked bringing up the configuration program most of the times without any issue and suddenly when least expected service.xml got resetted. F-secure IS 2011 clearly have a bug, which the 2010 version did not have. I don't have much knowledge about the inner workings of F-Secure, but I guess if parts of RS gets denied full permissions, which if stuck in "Ask" category very well may imply, strange things can happen. Since manually changing svcoptions.exe in F-secure to "Allow" process, I haven't had any problems yet. Have been trying hard to reproduce the wipeout again and luckily i haven't been abled to so far. I'll give it some time though, cuz earlier it could go weeks between the wipeouts Edited May 27, 2011 by majstang
majstang Posted July 11, 2011 Author Posted July 11, 2011 Just to update this thread...during these two month i had two service.xml wipeouts occuring. - First several weeks ago when F-secure Internet Security 2011 was updated. The svcoptions.exe automatically went back to "Ask" category and shortly thereafter a wipeout of service.xml occured when starting configuration. - Second a couple of days ago. This is the mysterious one cuz all RS files was in "Allow" category and service.xml got wiped out anyway. I'm clueless now, wondering if this issue is caused by F-secure alone or not
