Fatal crash w/ nVidia codecs

Recommended Posts

Very recently, nVidia released their "NVIDIA DVD Decoder" at

http://www.nvidia.com/object/dvd_decoder.html

Delivery after purchase consists of an activation key - very painless, very inexpensive.

Unfortunately, every attempt at using the delivered codecs so far has failed. Yesterday, the codecs simply wouldn't "react", today, I tried installing to a non-default location (C:\Program Files\nVidia\codecs) and I get a *whole* lot more ;-)

First of all, there is this rather nice-ish, working multi... oh, wait - this is the DVBViewer forum ;-) Well, I also get

---------------------------

ActiveMovie Window: dvbviewer_BETA.exe - Application Error

---------------------------

The exception Privileged instruction.

(0xc0000096) occurred in the application at location 0x4f045867.

Click on OK to terminate the program

Click on CANCEL to debug the program

---------------------------

OK Cancel

---------------------------

just when trying to start DVBViewer (which I named dvbviewer_BETA.exe). At the time the above crash appears, a tray icon "NVIDIA Decoders" is already up and running; the main DVBViewer window is showing, too.

This is what Visual Studio .net 2003 has to say:

Unhandled exception at 0x4f045867 in dvbviewer_BETA.exe: 0xC0000096: Privileged instruction.

[My, what a surprise] There is no useful stack trace, but I fortunately get

> nvauddec.ax!4f045867()

out of this. Additional information is provided by the list of loaded modules:

all of which are probably due to the slightly premature death of something ;-P

Oh, still with me? Well, yes, I know, I should post the SETUP.INI. Please forgive me for not doing so. Yes, I know, that's one big heap of modules loaded above. I guess DVBViewer was trying to start up with CNN (mono audio).

Ok, next data point:

- plugins disabled

- LastStation removed from SETUP.INI

Starting up works well, but switching to, say, ARD will automatically trigger the privileged instruction exception.

This problem affects all source filters I tried: "DVBViewer" (beta), "DVDViewer classic", "marfi" (as shipped with 2.3 beta, I think).

Private debug builds welcome (no size limitation)!

LOL.

I just tried a - still installed - nvdvd 2.55 installation. Guess what? Same crash.

That "nStantMedia.exe" deployed with the codecs works very nicely, though, on MP3s as well as on MPEGs and DVDs.

Odd.

And one more request, if I may:

Would it be possible to add slightly more information to the DVBViewer codecs selection page? I'd really love to see

- location of the codec

- version information

At least the nVidia codecs seem to have the nasty habit of registering with different GUIDs, but the very same descriptive name. Now try to figure out which codec is which :-/

One final bit of information for those debugging this problem:

Unregistering the codecs deployed with the "NVIDIA DVD Decoder" and re-registering those shipping with nvdvd 2.55 will restore a working system.

Oh, the shame, the shame! Sometimes it does pay off to read debugging information!

Look at the modules list as posted above and notice

*That* cannot work - and I'd like to timidly point at nvidia for allowing that to happen :-/

After a "unregister everything, really, yes, really" and a "lets register a few select codecs", all is well - except for the audio decoder. Sigh. I am confident, though, that my stupidity will lighten up for a few seconds so that I get the nvidia decoder to work, too...

Perhaps it's just a reboot...

Well, you don't have to use NVidia Audio, do you? Or do you insist on it cause you've paid for it?

IMHO there are better ones. On my PC the NVidia Audio is a troublemaker ever since...

Nope, nothing forces me to use the nVidia audio codec; if there is a better available alternative at reasonable cost, I am all ears.

Right now I only have

MPEG Audio Decoder

NVIDIA Audio Decoder

Nero Digital Audio Decoder

on my system. In the past, the nVidia codec performed quite well when it came to AC3 decoding (I don't have any of these surround systems myself, but it really shows even on a plain, very ancient stereo - it takes just a bit of ooompffhhh ;-))

I suspect that my current problems are due to some mess I created myself - I'll continue tinkering.

many user reports problems with nero audio codec, but here it runs without problems and nvidia too. Only Audiorecorder don't like it.

Nvidia codecs 2.55 and 3 runs verry well! And i love the NVIDIA Video codec !!! For me its the best one. And i guess the best audio codec is Intervideo. Better than Moonlight!

Bought the Nvidia DVD Decoder and it's running ok here with DVBViewer.

Using Nvidia Video decoder and Intervideo audio decoder.

Never have had trouble with Nvidia and I agree they're the best.

MPEG Audio Decoder

NVIDIA Audio Decoder

Nero Digital Audio Decoder

Well, that's a (sorry) poor selection.

Nero Audio is even worse. MPEG Audio doesn't know AC3 and can't cope with stereo/mono changes without being reconnected. The "Automatic Audio Format Detection" checkbox prevents most of the unpleasent results, but some channels switch from stereo to mono on the fly...

Alternatives:

Moonlight Odio. A reliable one. You get it for free with the Elecard Decoder Package (see pinned list of links in the German forum). Don't know wether the contained version decodes AC3 (recent versions do), but you may additionally install the

AC3 Filter. First choice for AC3. The classic 0.70 (here, AC3 only). Or the 1.01 RC5 (here). Decodes MP2 and AC3. Not completely bug-free, but performs well here. Must be configured with care, however, otherwise it will try to join every filtergraph as audio postprocessor (uncheck "Use AC3 Filter for PCM" on the system tab).

GPL Video and Audio Decoder (see pinned list...). The latter decodes MP2 and AC3. Not too bad... needs format detection support.

If you have WinDVD: InterVideo Audio. MP2 and AC3. Quite good.

Not everybody got happy with the free decoders mentioned above. Just give them a try... if they don't work flawlessly, you can kick them without regret.

I am using the new NVIDIA video codec and it work great, as I am using a NVIDIA card FX5700 ultra I am running with hardware acceleration DXVA and the new Nvidia VPP (video post processor).

The image runs very smooth with HDTV. Qualitywise is the best I have had.

Take care

i had the intervideo windvd installed, but the codec was very asynchronous ;) so i deleted the prog, but the nvidia 2.55 codec worked perfect for me. I couldnt decide...

my dvd-drive was bundled with cyberlink powerdvd.. @griga: is this a bad decoder? Could you make a ranking of the decoders you like best? ;) ?

griga, thanks for pointing out the poor state of audio codecs on this machine - having suffered from using both the Nero and Microsoft codecs, I can only agree with you.

I couldn't find much to fault the (previously working) nVidia 2.55 codec with; same 4.x codecs performed rather nicely, too - but the 4.0.58.0 codecs from the "nVidia DVD decoder" unfortunately do not work, currently.

Well, AC3Filter (1.1 RC5) quickly found its way onto the system - nice! Thank you for pointing out the PCM setting! It might be helpful to update the documentation to reflect this (and the newer version of AC3Filter).

At this time, I am rather reluctant to install my OEM copy of WinDVD4 - I have caused enough of a mess already ;-)

And one other thing that really improved the overall audio experience on my system turned out to be related to the Skystar2 kernel driver. Version 4.2.11 apparently has a few, err, DMA defects which 4.3.0 purportedly fixes. These manifested themselves by very audible CLICKs in *any* audio playback whenever DVBViewer was *not* running. Since I cannot 4.3.0 to work reliably in the presence of repeated channel switching (2.3 beta as well as very latest TE edition), I simply gave up and rolled way back to 4.2.8. I have nothing to complain about at the moment.

I might be inclined to tinker with 4.3.0 in a week or two, but for now I have had enough of kernel driver changes and associated reboots.

JayP, you mention the "Nvidia VPP (video post processor)".

Well, the "nVidia DVD Decoders" delivered

nvvpp.ax (1.0.58.0)

NVIDIA Video Post Processor

onto my system - and it appears to be registered. Unfortunately, DVBViewer does not appear to automatically make use of it? Do you use the graph plugin to add it?

One final nvauddec.ax clue:

Mine currently says

Major Type: Audio - Sub Type: GUID_NULL - Format: WaveFormatEx: 48.000 KHz 16 bit stereo

Major Type: Audio - Sub Type: GUID_NULL - Format: WaveFormatEx: 48.000 KHz 16 bit stereo

Major Type: Audio - Sub Type: PCMAudio - Format: WaveFormatEx: 48.000 KHz 16 bit stereo

in the Audio Output properties page in Graphedit - and that doesn't want to connect to anything, it seems :-/

Oh, wait. I was able to connect "backwards" - i.e.

DirectSound -> nVidia audio -> dvbsource audio

instead of

dvbsource audio -> nvidia audio -> directsound

Most odd. Anyway. Back to AC3Filter.

And, while I am talking to myself, this nVidia video post processor thing - FANTASTIC! (no apologies for the yelling, sorry :->)

Just one example: n-tv.

Without the post-processor in place, the station logo and clock in the upper right corner jumped, flickered a bit. With the post processor merged into the graph, it's rock solid.

Drawbacks I notice:

The bands at the bottom of the screen appear blurrier.

CPU load increases from 6-10% to 17-21% (very unscientific measurement)
