FAT32 on Network Drive

Hi.

I had a problem this week recording from a HD satellite feed. RS (v1.31) chose to record to a network drive with FAT32 formatting. Although the log file for the recording shows a file length of nearly 17GB, I can only find one 4GB file on the drive, containing the first 33 minutes of the programme.

The changelog for 1.29 says this:

Add: Recorder: The Recording Service automatically splits a recording into pieces slightly smaller than 4GB if the file is written to a FAT32 formatted drive. So there is no need to use the "Split file after..." option for this purpose anymore

So I'm guessing the recording should have been split over multiple files. Why didn't it work?

I attach the relevant extracts from the RS log. They don't indicate any problem.

Why didn't it work?

Most likely because FAT32 was not recognizable resp. not clearly indicated by the network drive. In this case splitting must be set up manually by launching RSTweaker.bat in the DVBViewer installation directory -> Auto-split file size for recording. This will affect all recordings, however.

Generally it is not recommendable to record to FAT32 formatted drives.

I have tweaked that setting, thank you. The network drive was not set up for recording, but it has a lot of free space and I use it as overflow when the local NTFS drive gets too full.

It might be helpful if RS were to assume FAT32 as the default unless it can determine otherwise.

After a recording was split into several files, I noticed a minor bug in the log file. It may not affect operation.

21:06:00 / 00:00:00 (~ 0.00 MB) Start Recording
21:06:01 / 00:00:00 (~ 0.51 MB) PID 211: H.264 Video, 16:9, 1920x1088, 25 fps
21:06:01 / 00:00:00 (~ 0.51 MB) PID 231: AC3 Audio Stereo, 48 khz, 192 kbps
00:23:00 / 03:17:00 (~ 1002.54 MB) Errors: 1
00:24:05 / 03:18:04 (~ 1002.54 MB) Stop

Average Data Rate: 0.084 MB/s
Total Size: 8802.5 MB (9230130720 Bytes)

Average data rate seems to have been calculated from the size of the last file, rather than the total size, which includes two previous files.
