A universal DVB receiver - is it possible?

Hi!

I do realize that it is possibly mostly due to hardware, not sofware problems, but could you explain...

Why is it so, that while we have in many places in Europe good possibilities to receive both DVB-S and DVB-T feeds and both techniques are very similar (mpeg and so on), you still cannot get a single card for both receptions. For me it is somewhat difficult to understand. Many chips in our PC:s are very universal ones, why not these? Why attempting to have both - sattelite and terrestrial - channels on 1 PC we still have to apply 2 very similar(!) cards?

The first one needs an other tuner which have to bring a electric signal to the LNB. The second one dont need such a tuner. So if you build a card with 2 different tuners you can use it.

It is a little bit more complicated.

You can build one device with one chipset and two tuner, but you can use one tuner only

or

you put two cards (two tuner, two chipsets, etc.) on one PCB and have two independent devices in one. (the expensive way)

The tuner (and some other components) are the main difference between the SkyStar 2, AirStar 2 and the CableStar 2 cards from TechniSat...
