I want to convert .ts recorded files into something smaller while retaining (most of) the original quality. Is that possible?

Hello,

I've been using DVBViewer for a number of years. In this time, I've got many .ts files from recorded programs. I'd like to convert these into another format for a smaller file size while retaining the original quality as much as possible. But I have no idea how to do that. Is that possible? If so, what do I need for doing it? I have a good PC, in case it matters (Ryzen 9 5950X, 64 GB RAM and an RTX 4090). Thanks.

This question cannot be answered generally, because the possible file size reduction depends on the content, the input and output video format and your quality requirements. For example, if the video format of your recordings is the old MPEG2, transcoding it to modern H.264 can reduce the file size considerably without losing much quality (decoding and re-encoding video always lowers the quality a bit). However, if the video format is already H.264, you will have to accept some quality loss if you want to make the files smaller, except if you select the successor H.265 (HEVC) video as output format, which is even more efficient..

In the end you will have to try... for example with Handbrake, which basically is a graphical user interface that makes it easy to use sophisticated command line tools for transcoding, like FFmpeg.

Thanks very much, Griga. :) I'll try the solution you suggested. Mediainfo says that my recorded .ts files are AVC, by the way.

Hello,

what about HEVC, H.265?

Is the quality worse than H.264? The compression should be stronger.

Many greetings

I use since a couple of years the WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe which is now Winxvideo AI to convert my files. In the past I converted to h264 because I used a sony bluray player for playback. Now I convert to h265 because I use now a mini PC with Windows and the MPC-HC x64 player with LAV codecs. An original file of 15gb can be easily crunched to 3gb. In my version, though, a 5.1 AC3 tone is converted to AAC which is in my experience not so good. Therefore I mux (mix) the created h265 file with the original tone tracks with the free MKVToolNix. This does not increase the file size significantly.

I did not upgrade to Winxvideo AI, yet, but I presume its even better and faster than my older version. There is almost no codec that cannot be converted. I also use this software to extract tone tracks lossless to wav from some videos (operas, concerts).

Here is a screenshot. After conversion of the 12gb TS h264 file it had 2gb. After muxing with the original tone tracks still only 2.7gb. And the muxing with this free tool only takes seconds. Saves a lot of space.
